Instructor: Myriam Tillson
Starts: September 3, 2019
This gouache workshop will be made up of 4 videos that will explore the use of gouache as a painting medium in its own right. Throughout the course, students will learn more about the particular properties of the medium, how it compares to other similar paints such as watercolor and acrylic, what materials work best with it, and how to use it to make the most of it and its specific qualities.
► WEEK 1: THE MEDIUM AND ESSENTIAL MATERIALS
– What is gouache? How does it behave?
– Comparison of gouache to watercolor and acrylics
– What brushes work best with it?-
– What paper works best with it?
– What makes up a good beginner set of colors?
► WEEK 2: BASIC TECHNIQUES AND EXERCISES
This lesson will establish 3 basic techniques to get the most out of gouache and will include an exercise for practicing each technique.
► WEEK 3: DEMO – PAINTING A LANDSCAPE
Gouache is a convenient medium that lets us get ideas down quickly and capture essential components of a subject.
Landscape painting is a useful for any practice as it allows us to refine our way of seeing subjects. Pinpointing what makes up a scene and knowing which elements are essential to translate onto paper is a crucial skill.
In this lesson we will practice painting a landscape, making use of some of its unique characteristics like quick dry-time and layering capabilities.
► WEEK 4: DEMO – PAINTING AN EYE
Gouache can also be used to paint more in-depth pieces. Week 4 will focus on everything we’ve learned in the previous lessons and put them into practice. We will be painting an eye to observe how to use gouache transparently and opaquely, layer in washes or thicker coats, and work from both dark to light and light to dark.
